Milkweed – Winter Sowing

  • Post category:Advice

Hey garden lovers! Looking to add some beauty and help pollinators this season? Winter sowing is the perfect way to start seeds for Native Plants such as Asclepias incarnata, or Swamp Milkweed! Here’s how to get started:

Why Winter Sowing?
It mimics nature, allowing seeds to naturally go through the cold-stratification process, giving them the best chance to germinate when spring hits. Plus, you get a jump on the growing season!

What You Need:

  • Asclepias incarnata seeds (available at Spencer’s Garden Centre)
  • A plastic container (milk jug, clear plastic bottle, or seed tray)
  • Potting mix
  • Water and a little labeling marker

Steps to Winter Sow:

  • Prepare your container: Cut a hole or remove the top for ventilation. Make sure the base can drain.
  • Fill with potting mix: About 2-3 inches deep.
  • Sow the seeds: Scatter your Swamp Milkweed seeds evenly across the surface.
  • Water gently: Keep the soil moist but not soggy.
  • Close it up: Cover with the lid or plastic wrap.
  • Place outside: Put your container in a spot that gets snow and cold (like a porch, balcony, or garden bed). Nature will take care of the rest!

Benefits:
– Gorgeous pink blooms for your garden
– Supports pollinators like monarch butterflies
– Thrives in wet soil areas
– You’ll be welcoming new milkweed plants this spring, all ready to attract butterflies and beautify your space!
